HMD was started due to the increase in returning patients into hospitals due to falls, poor safety, no equipment needs provided, or the wrong equipment provided that was not specific to them due to the patient's physical limitations or home structural limitations. The aging population is at higher risks for depression, social isolation due to inability to care for themselves independently, increase risk for falls, and frequent hospital visits. People are living longer lives and therefore our aging population is increasing. HMD began to look at how to help this population and others limited by physical and medical conditions. HMD's goal was for their client's to be able to stay in their homes as long as possible and as independent as possible through home adaptation or modifications. Since staying at home is the first choice of where the population would like to continue living, HMD was began.
